Are you feeling isolated, alone, and missing out on connection?

Do you struggle to make new friends?  Or are you going through a rough patch in your romantic life?  Whether you want to make amends, strengthen the bond with a relative, or form meaningful connections, relationship therapy can help. We are relational beings—it’s in our nature.  We long to be seen, heard, and supported by family members, colleagues, friends, and significant others.  But, when challenges impact the flow of those critical relationships or our ability to start new ones, we may suffer. Relationship therapy can help you nurture healthy relationships for a fulfilling life.

What Is Relationship Therapy?

Relationship therapy (or therapy for relationship issues) is a line of treatment designed to address relationship problems and foster wholesome connections.  This includes handling challenges in romantic partnerships, friendships, family, or work relations, among others. While some issues may be better treated in couples counseling or marriage counseling, others may need the entire family system (family therapy). Relationship therapy can support you as an individual or both parties involved. Your therapist can also help you navigate the uncertainty of a new connection or explore what’s preventing you from opening up to people.  The goal is to empower you with the necessary tools to establish balanced relationships.

Relationship therapy can help you:

Do We Need Relationship Therapy?

Sometimes you may find yourself withdrawing from your relatives, in constant conflict with your peers, having trouble dating, or not connecting with others. Yet, those relational difficulties might be gearing you towards improving them. No matter what your specific concerns are, there is a way to care for your relational needs.  We are here for you. If you are struggling with any of these issues, relationship therapy can help:

  • Poor social skills and other communication issues
  • Major life changes
  • Constant fighting or arguing with others
  • Divorce or separation
  • Violation of trust, lying, or infidelity
  • Intimacy issues (physical or emotional)
  • Isolation and loneliness
  • Abuse or aggression*

*Your safety is our priority. If you are in an abusive relationship, call 1.800.799.7233 or check other domestic violence resources.

What Is the Goal of Relationship Therapy?

Relationship therapy aims to help you work on relationship issues, recognize unhealthy practices, and develop tactics to form deep connections. Relationship therapy can also shine a light on your true self so that you can set clear boundaries and expectations with others.  When necessary, your therapist can offer guidance and a safe haven to bring a relationship to closure. No matter what bond you seek to enhance, the goal of relationship therapy is to help both parties regain trust, bolster connection and improve communication.

Regain Trust

Trust is fundamental in any relationship.  Dishonesty, infidelity, or unfounded insecurities may break that trust, making it hard for you to have confidence in yourself and others.  Relationship therapy can help you regain trust so you can feel safe and sure of one another.

Bolster Connection

All relationships involve some physical and emotional closeness.  Kissing your partner, crying over your friend’s shoulder, or sharing a personal story with a coworker are different forms of intimacy.  Relationship therapy can encourage you to bolster that connection so you can be in sync with each other.

Improve Communication

We don’t communicate the same way with our parents, spouses, or colleagues.  But we can find strategies to interact with each one of them with respect and intention.  Your therapist will support you in identifying communication patterns and improving your verbal and non-verbal cues.
