About Nicole Brennan, Ph.D.

Years before graduate school I was riding a bus and engaged in a conversation with someone who gave me the most focused, judgment-free attention that I had ever experienced. I later learned that she was a psychotherapist and my curiosity in the power of therapy was ignited. Our environments are increasingly complex, and the demands put on us in our many roles can feel disorienting. As a psychologist I work to understand your strengths and struggles without judgment. Whether you are entering therapy to address a circumscribed difficulty, or to better understand yourself, I aim to approach each of my clients with the same non-judgmental, fully present attitude that was so meaningful to me so many years ago.

My Approach:

I am an integrational therapist and will bring skills from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Psychodynamic Psychotherapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), and Parent Management Training (PMT) among many others. I treat children and adults and I specialize in complex childhood trauma, attachment, parenting and couples work. I approach the treatment of depression and anxiety with a holistic multi-pronged approach. I also have extensive experience in neuropsychological assessment and am skilled at neurological conceptualizations in therapy should the need arise (like ADHD, Learning Differences and Memory).

Professional Background:

I came to clinical psychology from a previous career in clinical neuroscience where I published and lectured extensively. I spent a year at Harvard Medical School studying the impacts of language assessment on neurosurgical techniques. I have also taught undergraduate students as a teaching fellow at The New School. I earned my BA from New York University in psychology and my Master’s and Ph.D. degrees from The New School in New York City. I worked and trained at Staten Island Psychiatric Hospital, NYP Weill-Cornell Medical Center and two years at Columbia Psychoanalytic Institute. I was also part of the Combined Child, Adolescent and Adult track at Montefiore Medical Center. My dissertation focused on the effects of adverse childhood experiences on emotion regulation in the brain and adult attachment later in life. As a Spanish speaking clinician, I have conducted forensic and trauma assessments for individuals involved in immigration matters. Lastly, I served as President of my local Board of Education for 4 years, so I am well versed in school-based challenges.
