Individual Therapy

Individual psychotherapy, also known as “talk therapy” or counseling, is a space for you to examine your life, motives, habits, issues, and way of thinking with the guidance of an expert psychologist. It can be helpful to have a psychologist specifically trained in relevant cultural competencies to assist you. In the context of the LGBTQ+ community, it can be life-changing. The Gender and Sexuality Services at Madison Park is staffed by psychologists who have received extensive training to provide competent care to the LGBTQ+ community and many are members of the LGBTQ+ community themselves.

Members of the LGBTQ+ community deal with many of the issues experienced by everyone else, as well as the intersections of those issues with gender and sexuality, race, religion, and class. . If you are a lesbian, gay, bisexual, pansexual, demisexual, asexual, aromantic, queer, transgender, non-binary, agender, genderqueer, or gender-expansive person in search of a space to explore issues related to your identity, or simply trying to find a space where you can consider your life and mental health without your problems being dismissed as part of your identity, we are here to help you.

Individuals who are questioning their gender and sexuality will also find the Gender and Sexuality Services at Madison Park a supportive place to explore possibilities. Identity is often a question at the core of mental health services. If you are uncertain of your sexuality (lesbian, gay, bisexual, pansexual, asexual, aromatic, heterosexual, and more) or gender (transgender, non-binary, agender, genderqueer, gender-expansive and more), regardless of whether this is a sudden development or a question you’re coming around to, we are well equipped to assist your self-reflection and growth. You don’t need to know yourself fully before you come to therapy – we can help you figure it out, in your own time.

Regardless of your gender or sexuality, whether you are intersex or perisex, the psychologists of the Gender and Sexuality Services at Madison Park are interested in you as a specific person, with your own experiences and understanding of what it means to be who you are. We appreciate the unique struggles of intersex individuals, who may have positive or complicated relationships to the LGBTQ+ community, and we are uniquely suited to addressing the needs of the intersex community.

Regardless of gender, sexual, or romantic orientation, our services are inclusive of members of the BDSM, fetish, and kink communities. We are also inclusive of sex workers, and have experience serving these communities with respect, care, and special attention to your unique experiences.

For those who are not themselves directly members of the LGBTQ+ community but are interested in therapy to help themself support the lesbian, gay, bisexual, pansexual, asexual, aromatic, transgender, non-binary, agender, genderqueer, or gender-expansive person in their life, we offer a non-judgemental space for growth, exploration, and consideration. You do not need to be a member of the LGBTQ+ community to work with the psychologists of the Gender and Sexuality Services at Madison Park, who are here to help you navigate difficult moments as well as joyful ones with curiosity and compassion.

Relationship And LGBTQ Family Therapy

The Gender and Sexuality Services at Madison Park offers relationship therapy for more than one person at a time. This may be family therapy or therapy involving romantic or platonic partners, and can include several people. We do not limit relationship therapy sessions to only two individuals.

Relationship therapy is a space to explore and address the dynamics of various kinds of relationships in a collaborative format. This includes romantic and platonic partners and family members of lesbian, gay, bisexual, pansexual, demisexual, asexual, aromantic, queer, transgender, non-binary, agender, genderqueer, gender-expansive, and questioning individuals, as well as consensual non-monogamous relationships, polyamorous relationships, open arrangements, and multi-parent families.

Every relationship is unique, and those with unconventional structures may encounter barriers to accessing the care and understanding that they need to begin the process of increasing deeper communication. At Madison Park, our psychologists are trained to provide expert LGBTQ couples therapy, addressing challenges such as communication struggles and trust issues.

All relationships, no matter the structure, encounter difficult moments where seeking an  outside perspective is helpful. The psychologists of the Gender and Sexuality Services at Madison Park are trained to provide expert care for relationships with more than two partners, we provide specific relationship therapy to help polyamorous or ethically non-monogamous partners  navigate the unique interpersonal challenges which may arise in their lives.

If you or your relationship is in a place where you feel unable to effectively communicate with or trust someone close to you, you are not alone. The psychologists of the Gender and Sexuality Services at Madison Park will work with you to find the balance in your particular family or relationships, specific to the constellation of your individual personalities and histories.

Group Therapy For LGBT

The Gender and Sexuality Services at Madison Park offer two psychotherapy process groups for members of the LGBTQ+ community, one for Adults and another for Adolescents. Participants in Group Therapy through the Gender and Sexuality Services both receive and provide support for each other, creating an environment where experiences can be shared without fear of judgment or discrimination. Through sharing experiences and viewpoints with each other, group members gain new insights and perspectives in  dealing with their personal challenges, while interactions in the group foster better communication and social skills. Group members provide feedback to each other, aiding self-awareness and growth, and observing others’ progress can offer practical tools for managing one’s own issues.
