About Emily Chassman, M.A.

I bring a patient-centered stance to my therapy practice that allows me to learn who you are and help you to achieve the personal goals and growth you are seeking. The challenges we face throughout life can feel heavy and I am here to work alongside you in navigating them. Through gentle curiosity and exploration of the self, I strive to help you cultivate your innate strengths so you can experience freedom from worry and anxiety, greater fulfillment in your relationships, and more authenticity in your life.

My Approach:

As a therapist, I work from a place of curiosity, compassion, and authenticity. My clinical work is rooted in an interpersonal psychodynamic framework, as I see personality and one’s sense of self to be fundamentally rooted in interpersonal relationships. I believe our struggles, and what often brings us to seek therapy, as having roots in early childhood dynamics which can impact how we relate to others and ourselves. By exploring ourselves and our past experiences, I believe we can reduce negative symptoms, develop more effective coping strategies, and create more contentment and peace in our lives.

I work to meet you where you’re at and stive to find the right approach that will work best for you. I incorporate techniques from the evidence-based practices of Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and trauma-informed treatments to find what resonates most with you.

I have expertise in working with individuals who struggle with depression, anxiety, relationship and intimacy issues, have experienced trauma, are navigating major life transitions, and struggle with substance use. I work individually with adults, as well as couples and with groups.

Professional Background:

I am a doctoral candidate in Clinical Psychology at the Gordon F. Derner School of Psychology at Adelphi University. I received an M.A. in Clinical Psychology at Teachers College, Columbia University, and an undergraduate degree in English Literature at Trinity College. I specialize in both short-term and long-term psychotherapy with adults, couples, and groups, as well as consultation and psychological assessment. My prior clinical experience has included placements at Mount Sinai Beth Israel, John Jay College Counseling Center, The Headspace Training Institute, and the Adelphi University Center for Psychological Services. My dissertation explores the role of shame-proneness in mental health stigma.
