About Dorin Levy, M.A.

I view therapy as a space where you can get to know yourself more profoundly and more honestly. As a therapist, I come into the therapeutic space first and foremost as a listener with a curiosity and a desire to reach a deeper understanding of the desires, fears, and inner struggles that are known to you, and those you would like to further explore. I believe the therapeutic relationship is an integral part to setting the stage for change and I feel privileged to take part in it. My purpose in therapy is that you will feel safe to explore new, more beneficial, ways of being and attain an increased understanding of the driving forces behind patterns and behaviors that may no longer be serving you.

My Approach:

I am a psychodynamic and psychoanalytically informed therapist. I draw from Object Relations and contemporary Relational theories which means that I believe that our earliest relationships in life and our early childhood experiences shape who we are as adults. I emphasize the importance of self-reflection and believe therapy is just as much about the process as it is about the “end goal”. The more profoundly we know ourselves the more clarity we can gain about how we want to live a more meaningful and fulfilling life. This process often goes hand in hand with symptom relief such as letting go of unwanted worry and ruminative thoughts, improved mood, renewed sources of enjoyment and creativity, greater tolerance of stressful life transitions, and a stronger, more meaningful connection to ourselves and others.

I have experience working with adults, emerging adults, and children who struggle with anxiety, depression, navigating stressful life events, acculturation and immigration related stressors, creating and maintaining meaningful relationships, and trauma.

My Professional Background:

I am currently completing my doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology at The Derner School of Psychology, Adelphi University. Prior to entering the field of psychology, I received a bachelor of Fine Arts from Parsons School of Design and was a painter and art educator for over a decade. My path from art to psychology began with my interest in the overlap between art and psychoanalysis. My previous experiences include working as a researcher at Mount Sinai, Beth Israel hospital in both inpatient and outpatient settings with high-risk populations, long-term and short-term individual psychotherapy with adolescents and adults at the Greene Clinic and at the National Institute for the Psychotherapies (NIP), and group and individual therapy at the NYU College Counseling and Wellness Center.
