About Alanna Doherty, Ph.D.

Therapy is an active and collaborative process that can create meaningful movement in your life. Together, we can explore what may be keeping you stuck, open up new ways of thinking about yourself and your experiences, and discover new possibilities for how you move through your relationships and the world. I work with individuals, couples, and families, and tailor our work together to what you need.

Whether you are seeking relief from something that feels difficult right now or hoping to make deeper, lasting changes, we will work together to identify what you want to be different and find a path forward. My goal is not simply to help you understand yourself, but to use that understanding to create greater freedom, flexibility, and choice—and ultimately to help you build a life that feels more satisfying and fulfilling.

My Approach:

I approach therapy from a psychodynamic and relational perspective, paying close attention to the patterns that shape how you experience yourself, your relationships, and the challenges you’re facing right now. Together, we work to bring these patterns into clearer focus so they stop operating quietly in the background, creating more options for how you respond and how you feel. I strive to create a nonjudgmental space characterized by warmth, trust, and openness, where meaningful change can take place.

I also believe that therapy should be responsive to each unique person, rather than follow a single formula. While psychodynamic thinking provides the foundation for my work, I integrate practical tools from DBT, CBT, mindfulness, and executive functioning support. Depending on what you need, our work may at times focus more directly on managing distress or navigating an immediate challenge, while at other times we may slow down to explore emotions, relationships, and longstanding patterns in greater depth. My goal is to meet you where you are and create an individualized approach that supports both meaningful insight and lasting change.

Professional Background

I received my Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology at the City University of New York, where my research focused on psychologist self-disclosure and the therapeutic process. I have held positions at Mount Sinai Morningside & West, Mount Sinai Behavioral Health Center (formerly Beth Israel), Manhattan School of Music, The Psychological Center, and in private neuropsychological practice. I specialize in short- and long-term individual therapy with adults and adolescents, along with therapy for couples, families, and groups.

Before training as a psychologist, I worked as a lawyer and mediator, primarily helping couples navigate separation and other major life transitions. That work drew me toward the emotional side of what people were going through and showed me how having space to be truly understood could change how they moved forward. My experience working with couples ultimately became a natural bridge to my work in couples therapy and, more broadly, to my decision to shift careers and pursue psychology.
